First Look: Nordic
Nordics are a Synchro-based deck focused around summoning the Level 10 Norse Gods Thor, Lord of the Aesir, Loki, Lord of the Aesir, and Odin, Father of the Aesir. Each one has their own archetype built for them with Nordic Beasts for Thor, Nordic Alfars for Loki, and Nordic Ascendants for Odin. The game plan is to use these Nordic monsters in order to summon 1 of the big synchros, and have it stick throughout the entire game with their effects to constantly bring themselves back.
-
Baggy Sleeves:
Allows you to gain more advantage off your Aesir monsters being destroyed and can allow you to gain some momentum after they are gone. -
Light and Dark:
Can create consistency with the deck by having things like Valkyrie of the Nordic Ascendant and Mimir of the Nordic Ascendant be searchable for eachother. -
Labyrinth Builder:
You use this in tandem with your Ljosalf of the Nordic Alfar to allow you to summon Valkyrie and synchro into Star Eater. Can also just use it with a Level 2 for an easy Black Rose Dragon. -
Beatdown:
You should almost never have more than 1 Aesir monster on the field, so it is just a 300 ATK point boost.
Aesir Monsters
Odin, Father of the Aesir:
Strongest stat wise of the Aesir monsters with pretty strong effects. Making himself unaffected by Spells and Traps for the turn can be weird since the opponent can chain to the effect with something like Treacherous Trap Hole or a World Legacy Clash, however it does stop battle Traps. No deck currently on the Tier List can hit over an Odin so they have to rely on their effects to try to get rid of him. His on-destruction draw effect comes in very handy since you are most likely summoning him off your Valkyrie of the Nordic Ascendant which costed you 3 cards from hand. This allows you to refuel especially in combination with a Skill like Baggy Sleeves.
Thor, Lord of the Aesir
The weakest effect wise of the Aesir monsters, but can be easily summonable through the Super-Nimble Mega Hamster combo. Negating the effects of monsters on the board can be good against things like Desperado Barrel Dragon and Crystrons, stopping their mid-turn disruption. If Thor gets resurrects then he does 800 damage to the opponent which is a 5th of their Life Points. Not a lot but sometimes it can make or break a win or loss.
Loki, Lord of the Aesir:
The weakest stat wise of the Aesir monsters but has a Legendary Six Samurai - Shi En-like effect during your battle phase. It can make your opponent have to use their Spells and Traps at awkward times. His resurrection effect of adding a Trap Card from grave to your hand is also very powerful allowing you set up your Treacherous Trap Hole and use it multiple times in a game. The main issue is that you need to run the Nordic Alfar Tuners for the resurrection and they make it hard to summon Loki in the first place. Definitely the hardest one to summon with its deck being a little awkward to always get going.
Nordic Ascendant
Vanadis of the Nordic Ascendant:
Very strong tuner. She can be used for all of the Aesir monsters with a built in level changer that thins your deck. Very strong and splashable in every different Nordic Build.
Valkyrie of the Nordic Ascendant:
1 card Odin, Father of the Aesir! Almost every Nordic deck should be running at least 2 Valkyrie since she can turn your bricks into an Odin with a resurrection. She also has some synergies with the other tuners to make Crystron Quariongandrax.
Mimir of the Nordic Ascendant:
Very weak card. Most builds won’t be running spell cards other than maybe World Legacy Clash. You mainly use him in tandem with Light and Dark to be able to search your Valkyrie of the Nordic Ascendant from the deck.
Nordic Beasts
Guldfaxe of the Nordic Beasts:
Your Nordic Beast tuner. You mainly use him as your generic tuner to go into things other than Thor, Lord of the Aesir like Crystron Quariongandrax or Black Rose Dragon, using him in tandem with Tanngnjostr of the Nordic Beasts. His effect has future potential, but currently none of the Tier 1 or 2 decks go into synchros (however, almost all the Tier 3 decks do).
Tanngnjostr of the Nordic Beasts:
Also known as “Black Goat”. His first effect can give you extra protection and help allow you to live through more turns. His second effect in combination with Super-Nimble Mega Hamster can create you a 1 card Thor, Lord of the Aesir, Crystron Quariongandrax, or Black Rose Dragon. This is one small combo to easily create one of your synchros with ease. A lot of the decks in the meta right now are only capable of attacking once on their first turn
Tanngrisnir of the Nordic Beasts:
Also known as “White Goat”. You mainly use this card as the Level 3 Nordic monster that can be summoned off of Tanngnjostr of the Nordic Beasts. He is also a great defensive tool to make your opponent have to attack 3 times to get through this one card.
Garmr of the Nordic Beasts:
One of the few Level 4 non-Tuners. His effect is pretty useless in this meta of high Level monsters currently. Only use is to be used with Mara of the Nordic Alfar to help summoning Loki, Lord of the Aesir.
Nordic Alfar
Dverg of the Nordic Alfar:
Can allow you to create small synchros like Samsara, Dragon of Rebirth or Armades, Keeper of Boundaries through your Guldfaxe of the Nordic Beasts. The extra Normal Summon can come in handy pretty often to let you extend your plays into your bigger synchros. When he is sent to the graveyard from field you can add a Nordic Relic from your graveyard to hand. Your Nordic Relics are pretty mediocre for the most part other than maybe Nordic Relic Laevateinn.
Mara of the Nordic Alfar:
Very interesting card. Mara gives you a very easy way to Synchro Summon as long as you have the stuff in your hand. Has no restriction on what you can Synchro into which gives this card lots of opportunities. The levels of the Nordic monsters make it awkward to use this card at times though since it may force you to run less optimal builds to have you go into the Synchros you want. It also needs exactly 2 Nordic monsters in your hand and cannot use anything on the board already.
Svartalf of the Nordic Alfar:
Your other Nordic Alfar tuner. Svartalf is just a very awkward card to try to use in most builds. Having a Level 5 tuner for your Loki, Lord of the Aesir to summon can be very difficult without the help of skills or other cards. In combination with Dverg of the Nordic Alfar you can generate a +1 by having Nordic Relic in grave.
Nordic Relics
Nordic Relic Laevateinn:
One of the best ones. It is a stronger Michizure that allows you to to destroy a monster that destroyed a monster this turn and not allow anything to be chained after it. Things like Legendary Six Samurai - Shi En can’t negate this and they will still be destroyed, but things that prevent destruction like Neos Fusion can still be used. It is a generic card also so we could see this in other decks possibly.
Nordic Relic Brisingamen:
Way too limited on what it can do. Just copies an opponent’s monster’s ATK to one of your monsters. Worse than a lot of battle traps and offensively just makes you tie which isn’t great.
Nordic Relic Megingjord:
Can be played as a way to quickly close out a game or slow a game down. This will hardly be used defensively on your Aesirs since most decks can’t get over them, but offensively you can swing 8k with Odin and try to one shot someone. Very gimicky but has potential if the deck is able to be fast enough and consistent enough to pull it off.
Nordic Relic Gungnir:
Potential in a slower build to create some advantage by removing your Nordics from play.
Other Nordic Cards
Jormungardr the Nordic Serpent:
Funny meme card. If you can pull this off, you’re a legend. You can combo this is Mara of the Nordic Alfar and Dverg of the Nordic Alfar to create Star Eater.
Tyr of the Nordic Champions:
Very weak card. Needing to have another monster on the field to keep this one on the field really hurts it. Its primary use is with Mara of the Nordic Alfar as a Level 4 to create Loki, Lord of the Aesir.
March Towards Ragnarok:
A good card for your Aesir monsters. It’s a Forbidden Dress that doesn’t minus your attack but is only effective on the Aesir monsters. Not very versatile with it only targeting your big monsters so you have to wait till you can summon one to activate this which will be too slow for Duel Links.
Gleipnir, the Fetters of Fenrir:
Very good card that can give you the last piece you need. It’s just a little slow for the deck to be able to always activate and has no immediate board impact.
Other Synergistic Cards
Super-Nimble Mega Hamster:
The combo starter for the deck. On flip you get to set Tanngnjostr of the Nordic Beasts straight from your deck and use his effect on your next turn.
Crystron Quariongandrax:
This deck has another variation of the Hamster combo to create an easy Quarion on turn 2. The current main combination to make him in this deck is:
Level 4 Tuner (Guldfaxe of the Nordic Beasts} or Vanadis of the Nordic Ascendant) + Level 3 non-Tuner (Black or White Goat) + Level 2 Tuner (Valkyrie of the Nordic Ascendant or Mara of the Nordic Alfar)
This gives the deck the disruption they are needing to close out games or swing the game in your favor. He also synergizes with him being able to special summon a banished monster which you will be doing quite a bit with the Aesirs and Valkyrie.
World Legacy Clash:
With the only way of dealing with your Aesir monsters is by Banishing them and destroying them when you have nothing else to banish with them. Clash makes it a lot harder to fully destroy them while also giving you OTK potential with Odin since he has 4000 ATK. Almost no monster in the meta right now will have any ATK left after you use Clash on them with your Nordic Gods (without Beatdown ofc)
Treacherous Trap Hole:
Very synergistic with Loki, Lord of the Aesir. Being able to constantly bounce this back to hand to activate again and keep popping stuff can be very good and keep up pace with the decks in the meta. Just using it twice will put you in the driver’s seat. It helps out your early game a lot too by helping you stall out an extra turn to get your Aesir monsters out.
Nordics are very fun once they get the ball rolling. The meta currently has Ancient Gears and Desperado as very strong in this metagame which have really good matchups against Nordics. This will keep them off the Tier List more than likely for the forseeable future. Once the community finds some new synergies between the cards the deck could be an interesting control deck using things like Nordic Relic Laevateinn or Nordic Relic Gungnir or a really fast beatdown deck trying to accelerate into your Aesir monsters or Crystron Quariongandrax quickly.
