First Look: Harpies

Introduction

Harpies are an archetype of Wind attribute Beast-Warrior monsters that are the main archetype used by Mai Valentine in the anime and have received support intermittently through Mai’s level up rewards, event rewards and splashed in boxes, but receiving its most impactful support in the Sign of Harpies Mini Box. The deck aims to turbo out its boss monster Cyber Slash Harpie Lady and pair it with backrow disruption such as Raigeki Break and Karma Cut to remove and bounce the opponent’s monster’s and set-up for an OTK on the next turn. With its swarming capability through Harpie Channeler alongside any “Harpie” card the deck is able to set-up a board of level 4’s that make it well suited to rank 4 spamming, giving it access to versatile extra deck utility in the form of Abyss Dweller, Evilswarm Ouroboros and Number 70: Malevolent Sin, with the possibility of adding in Harpie’s Pet Dragon for rank 7 plays such as with Mecha Phantom Beast Dracossack.

Archetypal Cards

Monsters

  • NOTE: All “Harpie” monsters become “Harpy Lady” when on the field or in the graveyard, but not in the deck, this is important for 2 specific interactions:
  1. Cards which specifically list “Harpie Lady” on them, such as Harpie’s Feather Rest and most importantly Elegant Egotist.
  2. If a monster whose original name is always “Harpie Lady” or counted as such (Such as Cyber Harpie Lady on the field is hit by a Karma Cut, ALL HARPIE MONSTERS IN THE GRAVEYARD WILL BE BANISHED AS THEY ARE ALL COUNTED AS “HARPIE LADY”.

Harpie Channeler (3X)

Duel Links Card: Harpie%20Channeler

Harpie Channeler is able to summon any “Harpie” monster from the deck in face-up defence position by discarding a “Harpie” card from your hand, furthermore if you control a dragon type monster her level becomes 7. Harpie Channeler is a core card and primary playmaker of the deck, by special summoning Harpie Perfumer you can search Elegant Egotist using Perfumer’s effect to set-up generic 2/3 material rank 4 plays such as Abyss Dweller, Number 70: Malevolent Sin and Evilswarm Ouroboros, or to summon the synchro monster Cyber Slash Harpie Lady. Alternatively, Channeler is able to summon Harpie’s Pet Dragon from the deck, this makes her level become 7 and gain access to generic Rank 7 XYZ’s such as Mecha Phantom Beast Dracossack to establish a defensive wall and provide generic removal. Furthermore, when combined with Level Augmentation, Channeler becomes lv 8 due to all the main deck Harpies (except dragon) being level 4, this allows Harpie Perfumer to search 2 cards on special summon, open up Rank 8 XYZ plays with Cyber Slash Harpie Lady, or allows you to summon a level 8 monster from the deck when paired with Swallow’s Nest such as Simorgh of Darkness for spell and trap disruption.

Harpie Perfumer (3X)

Duel Links Card: Harpie%20Perfumer

The decks second playmaker, Harpie Perfumer searchers for any spell/trap that specifically lists “Harpie Lady Sisters” from the deck, and if you control a level 5 or higher Harpie monster you may search a second such card but with a different name. By being able to search Elegant Egotist, Perfumer acts as a 1 card synchro/Rank 4 XYZ enabler when used as the opener, and when combined with Harpie Channeler and Level Augmentation to turn Channeler into a level 8 monster, can search both Egotist and Harpie’s Feather Rest, allowing you to generate a large amount of advantage and recover resources as mentioned above.

Harpie Harpist (1-2X)

Duel Links Card: Harpie%20Harpist

Harpie Harpist on normal summon can target 1 other Winged-Beat monster you control, and one face-up monster the opponent controls and return them to the hand, furthermore if it is in the graveyard because it was sent there this turn, you may add 1 Winged Beast monster with 1500att or less from your deck to your hand during the end phase. Harpie Harpist is primarily used in conjunction with Harpie Channeler to discard it and gain its search effect during the endphase whilst facilitating Channelers summoning effect; the bounce effect is lackluster due to targeting and only triggering on normal summon, with this card being low on the normal summon priority list in this deck, preferring instead to simply summon Channeler or Perfumer, the bounce effect rarely gets used in favour of simply extending your plays.

Harpie Oracle (1X)

Duel Links Card: Harpie%20Oracle

Harpie Oracle can be special summoned from the hand if you control a level 5 or higher “Harpie” monster, and on summon can recover a spell/trap that specifically lists “Harpie Lady Sisters” from the graveyard. Acting as both an extender and recovery, Oracle can be used in conjuncture with Harpie’s Feather Rest to provide an endless loop of draw power and recycling that grants Harpies a surprising durable long-term game plan and allows this card to be run at only 1 copy, whilst also being able to be used as fodder for generic Rank 4 XYZ plays or as fodder for Cyber Slash Harpie Lady.

Cyber Slash Harpie Lady (2X)

Duel Links Card: Cyber%20Slash%20Harpie%20Lady

Cyber Slash Harpie Lady is the boss monster of the deck, a level 8 Winged-Beast generic synchro that allows you to treat a “Harpie” monster used as material for its synchro summon to be treated as a tuner, furthermore when a spell or trap card or the effect of a spell or trap card (such as a field spell or continuous spell or trap) is activated you can (as a quick-effect) target one monster the opponent controls or one Harpie monster you control and return that target to the hand. When paired with generic disruption such as Book of Moon, Raigeki Break or Karma Cut as well as other generic quick-play spells like Forbidden Lance, Cyber Slash Harpie Lady is able to chain to the effect and bounce an opponent’s monster, greatly disrupting their plays and removing extra deck monsters by sending them back to the extra deck, it also allows you to recover Harpie monsters on the field to protect them and re-use their effects on the following turn or reset a Harpie Channeler that has been affected by Level Augmentation.

Harpie Lady 1 (2X)

Duel Links Card: Harpie%20Lady%201

Harpie Lady 1 increases the attack of all Wind Attribute monsters on the field by 300 attack. Whilst this may seem incredibly lacklustre, Harpie Lady 1 is actually a critical card in the deck for two primary reasons:

  1. Due to being called “Harpie Lady” it is one of the few useful cards that is summonable from the hand or deck using Elegant Egotist, this allows Harpie Perfumer to extend using Egotist into 2/3 material Rank 4 XYZ’s or serve as fodder for Cyber Slash Harpie Lady.
  2. The attack boost is critical for allowing Cyber Slash Harpie Lady to swing over monsters such as Blue-Eyes White Dragon or Azure-Eyes Silver Dragon when combined with either The Tie that Binds or a second copy of itself as both of them will stack, generating a 600 attack boost. These two factors make Harpie Lady 1 a must-have inclusion in the deck.

Harpie’s Pet Dragon (0-1X)

Duel Links Card: Harpie's%20Pet%20Dragon
Harpie's Pet Dragon is a level 7 Dragon type monster that gains 300 attack for each “Harpie Lady” on the field. This cards primary use is to be special summoned from the deck onto the field using Harpie Channeler to facilitate rank 7 XYZ plays, the most notable of which being Mecha Phantom Beast Dracossack as a protection and removal option, however this card is bricky and basically useless if drawn.

Spells and Traps

Elegant Egotist (1-2X)

Duel Links Card: Elegant%20Egotist

Elegant Egotist allows you to summon a “Harpie Lady” or “Harpie Lady Sisters” from the hand or deck while you control a “Harpie Lady”; note that this card specifically lists “Harpy Lady” and not “Harpie” which means that, alongside sisters, the only monsters this card can summon are: Harpie Lady, Harpie Lady 1, Harpie Lady 2, Harpie Lady 3, and Cyber Harpie Lady. Whilst the summon selection may make this card seem lackluster, its prime use in summoning a body to facilitate synchro plays into Cyber Slash Harpie Lady or to extend into a generic rank 4 XYZ such as Abyss Dweller, making it a critical card in the deck.

Harpie’s Feather Rest (1X)

Duel Links Card: Harpie's%20Feather%20Rest

Harpie’s Feather Rest shuffled 3 “Harpie lady” or “Harpie Lady Sisters” monsters from the graveyard into the deck to draw 1 card, if you control a level 5 or higher Harpie monster draw 2 instead. Searchable from Harpie Perfumer on summon, Harpie’s Feather Rest is core draw power and recycling for deck; it allows you to recycle your resources, specifically Harpie Oracle, who on summon can recover Harpie’s Feather Rest from the graveyard (all “Harpie” monsters count as “Harpie Lady” when on the field or in the graveyard) as well as the synchro monster Cyber Slash Harpie Lady allowing for an endless loop of recovery combined with draw power to reach your disruption and removal cards such as Raigeki Break and Karma Cut.

Hysteric sign (2-3X)

Duel Links Card: Hysteric%20Sign

Hysteric Sign is a continuous spell that on activation searches Elegant Egotist from the deck or recovers it from the graveyard, furthermore if it is in the graveyard because it was sent there from the field or the hand this turn, you can add up to 3 “Harpie” cards with different names from your deck to the hand during the end phase, you may only use one effect each turn, and only once that turn. Hysteric Sign acts as an additional way to search and recover Elegant Egotist thereby allowing you to run fewer copies, but the real draw comes from being able to search your deck for up to 3 different Harpie cards, ideally during the opponents turn so that you may search during their end phase, generating massive advantage that is more readily available for your use; this can be achieved through discard traps such as Raigeki Break (which can also pop your own Sign should It be on the field during the opponents turn), Karma Cut, Hallowed Life Barrier and Rainbow Life.

Cyber Shield (0-1X)

Duel Links Card: Cyber%20Shield

Cyber Shield is an equip spell that can equip to “Harpie Lady” or Harpie Lady Sisters and simply increases its attack points by 500. Whilst this might sound like a terrible inclusion, depending on the meta the card can actually be quite integral for allowing Cyber Slash Harpie Lady to both trigger her effect for removal or recovery, as well as setting her attack to 3100, allowing her to swing over big beaters she would otherwise need Harpie Lady 1 or The Tie that Binds to do so, alongside being a 3rd search target for Harpie Perfumer which has the added benefit of making Level Augmentation less of a bricky skill if you open Elegant Egotist or Harpie’s Feather Rest.

Harpies’ Hunting Ground (0-1X)

Duel Links Card: Harpies'%20Hunting%20Ground

Harpies’ Hunting Ground (HHG) is a field spell that increases the attack and defence of all winged-beast type monsters on the field by 200, furthermore whenever a player summons a “Harpie Lady” or “Harpie Lady Sisters” monster that player must target 1 spell/trap on the field and destroy it. Searchable from Harpie Perfumer’s effect, the +200 attack increase provided by HHG when combined with the +300 attack from Harpie Lady 1 allows Cyber Slash Harpie Lady to swing over threats it would otherwise be unable to swing over, utility similar to that provided by Cyber Shield; furthermore, Cyber Slash’s effect will be able to activate on each activation of the field spells effect when a Harpie monster is summoned, providing you with an incredibly easy way to trigger her effect. However, this field spell comes with 1 very critical downside - the spell and trap destruction effect, whilst good in theory, acts as a double-edged sword since the activation of the field spells destruction effect is MANDATORY; this means that if no other spell or trap card is on the field when a Harpie who is treated as Harpie Lady is summoned, you will have no choice but to target the field spell. Furthermore, the spell and trap destructions effectiveness varies depending on the type of backrow that is being played; against Treacherous Trap Hole this field spell is fantastic for removing it and turning off all subsequent copies of the card in the opponents deck, but against traps like Karma Cut and Raigeki Break the opponent will simply just respond to the effect with the trap you have targeted, removing the monster you have just summoned unless you have no further backrow protection. As such, this card is likely to be used as a meta call in meta’s where battle traps and counter traps are heavy, and most decks opt into cards such as Treacherous Trap Hole.

Hysteric Party (0-1X)

Duel Links Card: Hysteric%20Party

Hysteric Party is a continuous trap that allows you to special summon as many copies of “Harpie Lady” as possible from the graveyard by discarding 1 card as cost. Whilst this card is not searchable, the come-back potential of this card is incredible; alongside the discard for cost synergising with Harpie Harpist and Hysteric Sign, this card is able to revive all Harpie monsters that are treated as “Harpy Lady” while in the graveyard, including the synchro monster (provided it was properly summoned) alongside a Harpie Perfumer for a double search, or a Harpie Oracle for spell/trap graveyard recovery, as well as providing you with a way of destroying the opponents backrow when combined with Harpies’ Hunting Ground. NOTE: Even if you summon 2 or more Harpies with the effect of Hysteric Party whilst HHG is on the board, the effect of HHG will only trigger once, this can occasionally be a boon however, especially if the opponent has only set one backrow and you wish to summon multiple Harpies without losing HHG.

Relevant Non-Archetypal Cards

Monsters

Simorgh of Darkness

Duel Links Card: Simorgh%20of%20Darkness

Simorgh of Darkness is a level 8 Dark Winged-Beast monster that is also treated as Wind while face-up on the field that, once per turn, can tribute a Wind Winged-Beast monster to negate the activation of a spell or Trap or the effect of a Spell or Trap and destroy it, furthermore it can special summon itself from the hand or graveyard if a Wind or Dark attribute monster is tribute summoned. Whilst the special summon effect will not be used, by utilising Swallow’s Nest in conjunction with a Level Augmentation affected Harpie Channeler you can special summon Simorgh from the deck by tributing channeler, thereby providing you with a large body that, with the help of Harpie Lady 1 can reach 3100 attack points to swing over boss monsters and negate any of the opponents spells or traps once per turn, tributing itself off as cost for its effect if needed.

Hieratic Sun Dragon Overlord of Heliopolis

Duel Links Card: Hieratic%20Sun%20Dragon%20Overlord%20of%20Heliopolis

Hieratic Sun Dragon Overlord of Heliopolis can be summoned in the level augmentation version using Cyber Scratch Harpie Lady and a Harpie Channeler hit with Level Augmentation. The primary use for Helios is to out monsters that cannot be targeted, such as Lunalight Saber Dancer

Mecha Phantom Beast Dracossack

Duel Links Card: Mecha%20Phantom%20Beast%20Dracossack

Mecha Phantom Beast Dracossack can be summoned in variants that utilise Harpies Pet Dragon; On summon, Dracossack special summons 2 Mecha Phantom Beast Tokens, while you control a token Dracossack cannot be destroyed by battle or card effects, and once per turn you can trivute a Mecha Phantom Beast monster to target one card on the field and destroy it, but Dracossack cannot attack that turn. Dracossack acts as a defensive wall that protects the user whilst having access to spot removal through its own effect, forcing the opponent to get rid of the tokens before they can deal with Dracossack, and being able to tribute either one of its spawned tokens or itself off to use its destruction effect. However, due to the fact that Duel Links only has 3 monster zones to work with, Dracossack can easily clog the field and prevent you from summoning your own monsters, as well as requiring a bricky card to be run in the first place to be able to summon him, making him require caution when used.

Extra Deck Monsters – The Rank 4 Toolbox

Duel Links Card: Abyss%20Dweller
Duel Links Card: Diamond%20Dire%20Wolf
Duel Links Card: Number%2070:%20Malevolent%20Sin
Duel Links Card: Daigusto%20Emeral
Duel Links Card: Evilswarm%20Ouroboros

By using the effect of Harpie Channeler alongside the additional body provided by Elegant Egotist, Harpies have easy and consistent access to the rank 4 toolbox, including such cards as Abyss Dweller to deny the opponents card effects in the graveyard, Daigusto Emeral for additional draw power and recovery, Number 70: Malevolent Sin to enable OTK’s and Evilswarm Ouroboros to force a discard from the opponent’s hand, or as removal.

Generic Traps – The Discard Package

Duel Links Card: Raigeki%20Break
Duel Links Card: Karma%20Cut
Duel Links Card: Hallowed%20Life%20Barrier
Duel Links Card: Rainbow%20Life

The discard package of trap cards serves the additional purpose in this deck of discarding both Harpie Harpist and Hysteric Sign during the opponents turn to allow you to get their search effects during the opponents end phase, this is to make the resources generated more readily available instead of having to wait a full turn to use them, whilst also being prime fodder for the discard traps and allowing you to chain Cyber Slash Harpie Lady for additional disruption on the opponents monsters.

Generic Spells – The Quick-Play Package

Duel Links Card: Forbidden%20Lance
Duel Links Card: Swallow's%20Nest
Duel Links Card: Book%20of%20Moon

Alongside having synergy with Cyber Slash Harpie Lady like the traps above, the following cards also provide additional utility; Forbidden Lance has versatility as backrow protection or disruption during the damage step to allow Cyber Slash to swing over monsters it would not be able to normally, and Book of Moon protects from Karma Cut and serves as disruption for opponents synchro or XYZ plays, finally Swallow’s Nest increases the consistency of starting with Harpie Channeler whilst also being able to play through disruption by tributing for cost.

Relevant Skills

Level Augmentation

Level Augmentation allows you to turn Harpie Channeler into a level 8 monster which, as previously mentioned, allows Harpie Perfumer to search both Elegant Egotist and Harpie’s Feather Rest on summon as opposed to just one of the other whilst also facilitating Rank 8 plays with Cyber Slash Harpie Lady, or level 8 summon plays with Swallow’s Nest. However, whilst this skill has a large amount of utility, it can be a brick if you don’t start with Channeler as an opener, or you open your 1 copy of Harpie’s Feather Rest, Egotist or Simorgh of Darkness, thereby rendering the extra search pointless and the Swallow’s Nest play useless.

The Tie that Binds

The Tie that Binds, when combined with Harpie Lady 1 allows Cyber Slash Harpie Lady to become 3100 attack, thereby allowing it to overcome tough to handle threats such as Azure-Eyes Silver Dragon and Darklord Ixchel that the deck would not ordinarily be able to overcome.

Harpies’ Hunting Ground

Harpies’ Hunting Ground (abbreviated as HHG) plays the field spell of the same name at the start of the duel, increasing the attack of your winged-beast type monsters and whenever a Harpie Lady or Harpie Lady Sisters is summoned, target 1 spell or trap card on the field and destroy it. The attack boost of the field spell serves the same purpose as The Tie that Binds, to allow you to swing over threats you would not be able to normally, however the field spell has the added bonus of allowing you to target and destroy spell or trap cards whenever a “Harpie Lady” is summoned, this includes your own cards such as Hysteric Sign and Harpie Lady Elegance, as well as being able to trigger the effect of Cyber Slash Harpie Lady every time a summon of a “Harpie Lady” occurs. NOTES: the effect of HHG is MANDATORY – This means that if you summon a Harpie monster and the only spell/trap on the field is HHG, you will be forced to destroy it, rendering the skill effectively useless. Furthermore, whilst this effect does trigger Cyber Slash Harpie Lady, the summon of Harpie Perfumer WILL CHAIN BLOCK CYBER SLASH, preventing it from activating.

Harpies’ Last Will

Harpies’ Last Will adds a copy of Harpie’s Feather Duster from outside of your deck to the hand if you have 4 or more Harpies in the graveyard. Harpie’s Feather Duster allows you to destroy all spell and trap cards your opponent controls, making it possibly the strongest piece of backrow removal ever printed in the history of Yugioh, however whilst this might sound fantastic in theory, especially in meta’s where large amounts of backrow are commonplace, in practise the requirements for the skill are steep. Even with the new support, the number of Harpies that will be in your graveyard on turn 1 are commonly 3, and these Harpies are used as fodder for Harpie’s Feather Rest, meaning there is anti-synergy between the skill and one of the core cards of the deck; furthermore, since it will usually take more than 1 turn to set-up a graveyard with 4 Harpies, that means that you must make your plays through the opponent’s backrow anyway during turn 3 or if you go second versus the opponents backrow, rendering the backrow removal almost entirely moot by the time you actually meet the skill requirements to obtain it.

Sample Combos

a) Basic turn 1 play using Level Augmentation - Requires: Channeler + any Harpie monster (Credit to Atlas in the DLM discord)

  1. Normal Summon Harpie Channeler and use Level Augmentation to turn it into level 8.
  2. Discard a Harpie card to special summon Harpie Perfumer from the deck.
  3. Activate Perfumers effect to search Elegant Egotist and Harpie’s Feather Rest.
  4. Activate Elegant Egotist to summon Harpie Lady 1 from the deck
  5. Synchro into Cyber Slash Harpie Lady using Harpie Lady 1 and Harpie Perfumer as synchro materials.
  6. Activate Harpie’s Feather Rest to send the 3 Harpie monsters in the graveyard back into the deck and draw 2 cards.
  7. Chain the effect of Cyber Slash Harpie Lady to Harpie’s Feather Rest to return Harpie Channeler from the field to the hand.

NOTE: This combo can also be used to special summon a Rank 4 XYZ instead of the synchro to rest alongside the lv 8 Channeler. Alternatively, you can follow on from this position by using Channeler+Cyber Slash to XYZ summon a rank 8.

b) Harpie Combo without Level Augmentation – Requires: Channeler +any Harpie monster (Credit to Dulling in the DLM discord)

  1. Normal Summon Harpie Channeler and Discard a Harpie card to special summon Harpie Perfumer from the deck.
  2. Activate Perfumers effect to search for Harpie’s Feather Rest.
  3. Synchro summon Cyber Slash Harpie Lady.
  4. Activate Harpie’s Feather Rest to send the 3 Harpie monsters in the graveyard back into the deck and draw 2 cards.

c) Example turn 1 play - hand: Hysteric Sign + Harpie Channeler + Elegant Egotist + Harpie Lady 1

Conclusion

With the ability to swarm the field with level 4’s, giving them access to a strong line-up of rank 4 monsters, the ability to search and generate huge amounts of advantage to fuel discard traps such as Karma Cut and Raigeki Break, and a very powerful boss monster in the form of Cyber Slash Harpie Lady, Harpies have the potential to do very well in the meta game in spite of its short-comings regarding low attack values and lack or non-targeting removal, especially during the tournament scene with the decks strong side deck potential, making them a prime deck to watch out in the weeks to come.
