Onomat Guide

Introduction

The Onomat archetype is a relatively recent addition to Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links, arriving with the release of Zexal world. The archetype itself formed the cornerstone of the anime protagonist Yuma’s deck and was used as an engine for Utopia monsters. Each member of the archetype has an onomatopoeia name consisting of either Gagaga, Dododo, Gogogo, or Zubaba. Some cards have restrictions to a single naming convention whereas the more flexible options allow for interplay between the types. In its current form, the deck relies upon a unique skill Onomatoplay that enables unparalleled consistency to create OTK hands. Thus far, every box of the Xyz generation of Duel Links has brought greater power to this archetype. This anime-friendly deck has incredible power now and also great future potential as more and more archetypal cards are added and the Xyz options grow. The unique combination of consistency, swarming potential, and level manipulation allows for a variety of options in terms of deck building and gameplay and a wide range of different rank Xyz utilization. The intent of this guide is to introduce players to the archetype, discuss skill utilization, and to teach the basic combos for turn 1/turn 2 play to allow you to break nearly any board you come across.

Skill

  • Onomatoplay

This unique skill is the foundation upon which this deck exists. The skill is unlockable through PVP dueling, Legendary Duelist battles, or with the skill tickets and skill lottery. Unfortunately, it is not recommended to build and play this deck until the skill has been obtained for fear of terrible inconsistency. However, once obtained, this deck becomes the most consistent deck available in the game. The skill allows the player to select 2 archetypal cards from their hand (any Gagaga, Dododo, Gogogo, or Zubaba monster, spell, or trap) and exchange them for two archetypal monsters from the deck. Although the current skill demands two different cards being sent back to the deck, this is not a requirement. The retrieved monsters cannot be the same card. If the player only needs one different card to complete their combo, one other card can be sent back to the deck and retrieved before then selecting the desired card.

The skill is best used turn 2 to enable an OTK, but it can also be used turn 1 to establish a board and plan a counterattack. In its current form, the skill does not have any lifepoint or deck building restrictions. However, it is recommended to have sufficient archetypal cards in the deck to (nearly) always have access to the skill, allowing room for 2-4 tech cards. Besides enabling extreme consistency, the skill allows the user the one-of-a-kind ability to swap spells/traps for monsters, and because monsters form the backbone for the deck’s Xyz building and OTK generation, lots of archetypal spell/traps can be run without hindering OTK access.

Core Archetypal Cards

As mentioned above, there are several ‘families’ within the archetype - Gagaga, Dododo, Gogogo, or Zubaba. Within these families, cards generally have support for one another. The more flexible cards are either multiple types or can interact between the families. Many of the cards have effects that restrict summoning for the rest of the turn and should be accounted for when planning your turn.

Utopic Onomatopoeia (1-2x)

Duel Links Card: Utopic%20Onomatopoeia

This card enables combo plays through its ability to Special Summon multiple cards from the hand. The Special Summon is restricted to include one card from each archetypal family and locks you into only summoning Xyz monsters for the rest of the turn. This card is extremely versatile with its Special Summon effect, and with its other passive effect that treats it as a Gogogo, Dododo, Gagaga, and Zubaba monster at all times. That makes it a good target for Dodododraw. Currently, this is most often being run at 1 alongside other Dodoodraw targets.

Zubababancho Gagagacoat (3x)

Duel Links Card: Zubababancho%20Gagagacoat

The 3-of that this deck runs, this card is a very important combo extender that can special summon itself and has a second effect to special summon a Gogogo or Dododo monster from the grave. Using this effect also locks you into just Xyz summoning for the rest of the turn. A common interaction with this card is to summon it at the end of a combo with Gagaga Samurai on board in order to make sure you have enough for lethal through a hand trap.

Gagaga Sister (2-3x)

Duel Links Card: Gagaga%20Sister

The little sister of Gagaga Magician is an important card in the deck that searches for a Gagaga spell/trap. This deck plays a variety of Gagaga spells that can give you different toolbox uses to let you clear an opponent’s board or traps. She also has an important effect that allows for a wide variety of Xyz summons. By combining its level with other Gagaga monsters, she can Xyz summon monsters that are outside of the standard Rank 4’s this deck is able to do. She is often used as a turn one combo starter to make Photon Strike Bounzer or to help push for game with Constellar Ptolemy M7, but she can also be used to help bait backrow if you have a copy of Gagagabolt or Gagagawind already in hand. By searching the other copy and forcing the activation of their set backrow, you can then Special Summon with Gagagawind and proceed to do your standard combo without fear of backrow anymore. Choosing between 2 and 3 copies comes down to preference, but the most recent best performing decks are running 3 to maximize having Sister turn 1.

Gagaga Mancer (0-1x)

Duel Links Card: Gagaga%20Mancer

This card can be powerful in certain matchups and lacking in others. With no inherent effect to special itself, along with restricting you the most with its summoning effect, it sometimes finds itself cut from the main deck and relegated to the side deck.It can Special Summon a Gagaga monster from the grave, but doing so locks you into only being able to summon Gagaga monsters for the rest of the turn. The usually more relevant effect is when it is detached from a Xyz monster to activate its effect, it can target a Xyz monster you control to gain +500 attack until the end of the turn. Mancer is seeing less and less competitive play due to redundancy with the Gagagatag and Gagaga Child combo and has become a side deck contender for most.

Gagaga Head (1x)

Duel Links Card: Gagaga%20Head

The newest addition to the Gagaga monster line up is a Lv6 monster that offers incredible recovery plays. It can be Normal Summoned without tribute when your opponent controls a monster and you don’t. Summoning it using this effect will also change its level to 4. When this card is Normal Summoned, you can target up to 2 Gagaga monsters in your grave to Special Summon. This will lock you into only being able to summon Xyz monsters that use Gagaga monsters as materials for the rest of the turn. Finally, when a Xyz monster is summoned using it as a material, it will gain the effect of drawing a card when it is summoned. This card gives you the ability to safely use your skill turn 1 to search and make your hand out to be Sister, Coat, and Head. Head gives you the ability to safely recover and go for game should the opponent wipe out your board next turn.

Dodododwarf Gogogoglove (1-2x)

Duel Links Card: Dodododwarf%20Gogogoglove

The newest Dododo monster in our lineup gives us additional targets for Dodododraw and offers a similar effect to Utopic Onomatopoeia. It can Special Summon a Zubaba or Gagaga monster from the hand, and can also Special Summon itself from the grave if you control a Gogogo or Dododo monster other than itself. If you choose to Special Summon it from the grave, it will be banished when it is sent to the grave next. However, overlaying a Xyz monster and detaching it as material does not count as sending it to the grave so you can safely detach it and be able to use its effect next turn. A strong line of play is to fill your grave with both Utopic Onomatopoeia and Dodododwarf Gogogoglove. If you haven’t used both your Number 70: Malevolent Sin you can recover with Zubababancho Gagagacoat and push for game off that card alone. It will Special Summon Utopic Onomatopoeia then you can use Dodododwarf Gogogoglove effect in the grave to Special Summon himself, overlay Utopic and Gloves for Number 70: Malevolent Sin to banish a card, and attack for game with Number 70: Malevolent Sin and Zubababancho Gagagacoat.

Dododo Buster (1-2x)

Duel Links Card: Dododo%20Buster

The hidden gem that was used during the 2021 February KCCup. It can be Special Summoned from your hand while your opponent controls a monster and you don’t. Using this effect will make it Lv4 from Lv6. Being a Dododo monster makes you another target for Dodododraw ,you can be Special Summoned from the grave with the effect of Zubababancho Gagagacoat. Combine Buster with Dodododwarf Gogogoglove in the grave you can Rank 4 Xyz without even normal summoning.

Gagaga Child (1x)

Duel Links Card: Gagaga%20Child

This can enable turn 1 Rank 4 Xyz alongside of Gagaga Sister and has use in conjunctions with Gagagatag in spite of its normal paltry attack power. Child’s usage has risen meteorically in the past few weeks as a combo with Gagagatag to allow Onomats to beat over big monsters like Blue-Eyes, Mach, and Darklords. Most decks are running one copy now. Generally, decks run Gagaga Child and Tag or run neither.

The Spells

Duel Links Card: Dodododraw
Duel Links Card: Gagagabolt
Duel Links Card: Gagagawind
Duel Links Card: Gagagatag

Dodododraw (3x)

Duel Links Card: Dodododraw

The draw power that helps us draw into our techs and doubles as a combo maker. By discarding a Dododo monster you can draw 2. Typically you will play 3-5 targets for this between Utopic Onomatopoeia, Dodododwarf Gogogoglove and Dododo Buster and discarding those enables you to make your mainstay combos using less cards in your hand as well as combos that wouldn’t be possible without it. With Onomatoplay letting you return spare copies to the deck, there’s no reason to run less than 3 to help fill the grave and thin the deck.

Gagagabolt (1-2x)

Duel Links Card: Gagagabolt

Our archetypal spot removal, this card is often searched with Gagaga Sister to facilitate OTKs and to clear cards such as Necrovalley so we can proceed with our turn. The threat of this card alone forces opponents to use their Photon Strike Bounzer negate on Gagaga Sister, allowing you to extend into further plays without the risk of negation. Another use of this card is to bait the backrow, and it isn’t uncommon to open this, search Gagagawind, and Bolt the backrow to force the opposing play and then proceed to combo uninterrupted with your summon off Gagagawind. While F.A. Hang on Mach exists in this meta, Bolt will always have a role as a searchable way to clear this otherwise tough monster.

Gagagawind (1x)

Duel Links Card: Gagagawind

This card is an important extender that can let you go into your combos after your sister has been negated. It can also just summon a body on board to push through a hand trap or spare body after you’ve summoned your 2 Xyz monsters and have one spot left on board.

Gagagatag (1x)

Duel Links Card: Gagagatag

Tag has become a critical piece of the Onomat strategy. The inclusion of this card often enables plays that do not even require Xyz summoning, but it can also boost archetypal Rank 4 monsters to huge attack power to overcome big monsters. With the emergence of Tag, decks are generally cutting their Gagagabolt from 2 to 1 to compensate. This card is integrally associated with the inclusion of Gagaga Child and is not necessarily recommended without it.

Non-Core Archetypal Cards

Duel Links Card: Gagaga%20Girl
Duel Links Card: Gogogo%20Golem%20-%20Golden%20Form
Duel Links Card: Dododo%20Driver
Duel Links Card: Gogogo%20Giant

Unfortunately, these archetypal cards do not make the cut these days. Some of these have been used in the past with different metas and Xyz toolboxes, but currently they’re not recommended.

Duel Links Card: Number%2045:%20Crumble%20Logos%20the%20Prophet%20of%20Demolition

The extra deck for Onomat is tight. Your extra deck lineup will depend upon what decks you are facing most often and what is popular in the competitive scene. In the context of the KaibaCorp Cup, the extra deck list may be very dynamic. The recommended options below exceed the current extra deck space, and please pick the ones you feel are most relevant to your needs.

Photon Strike Bounzer, Constellar Ptolemy M7, Number 70: Malevolent Sin, and Gagaga Samurai are critical and should not be replaced.

Photon Strike Bounzer

Duel Links Card: Photon%20Strike%20Bounzer

Our main turn 1 go-to monster. A rank 6 monster that is easily made with Gagaga Sister and Zubababancho Gagagacoat which negates any monster effect and allows the player to choose when to use it. This monster is what was needed to make Onomat have a good turn 1 play without overcommitting resources.

Constellar Ptolemy M7

Duel Links Card: Constellar%20Ptolemy%20M7

Our rank 6 removal card. Can be used to return an opposing monster to the hand and be used to return a monster from your GY to your hand for more combos. It can even return itself for unclogging to do specific combos (these combos are very situational and rarely used so you won’t use this trick often).

Number 70: Malevolent Sin

Duel Links Card: Number%2070:%20Malevolent%20Sin

Currently one of the best rank 4s in the game, Number 70 (alternatively named spider) can banish an opponent’s monster until their next standby phase. The primary job of this card is to empty your opponent’s field by removing their monsters to then OTK them. With every attack, it gains 300 atk and 3 ranks but this effect will generally come up only when you fail to OTK your opponent.

Gagaga Samurai

Duel Links Card: Gagaga%20Samurai

This card’s effect allows you to detach 1 material and target a Gagaga monster to allow it to attack twice this turn. If you target itself and combo that with Gagaga Mancer effect to boost its attack, this card becomes a 1 monster OTK. If you combo this along with other monsters on the field, you can play through both Sphere Kuriboh , Kiteroid or even Battlin’ Boxer Veil and still be able to push for the game.

Steelswarm Roach

Duel Links Card: Steelswarm%20Roach

Generic rank 4 able to negate the summon of level 5 or higher monsters more than once per turn. Does not negate a summon that starts a chain. This is a relevant card as long as Blue-Eyes remains a top tier deck.

Diamond Dire Wolf

Duel Links Card: Diamond%20Dire%20Wolf

A generic rank 4 that allows you to destroy a beast, beast-warrior or winged beast you control and one card on your opponent’s field. Its job in this deck is to help remove cards in case you don’t have access to your other removal cards. Best used doing the Dododo Buster + Dodododwarf Gogogoglove combo.

Fairy Knight Ingunar

Duel Links Card: Fairy%20Knight%20Ingunar

A new generic rank 6 that requires three level 6. Its effect allows you to remove 2 Xyz materials to return every other card on the field to the hands. It’s not a quick effect, but your opponent can’t respond to this effect once you activate it. This card is one of our answers to untargetable monsters. Now that Gagaga Child and Gagagatag are being used more widely, Ingunar is no longer as necessary to out these tough boardstates.

Abyss Dweller

Duel Links Card: Abyss%20Dweller

A generic rank 4 that can stop graveyard effects from being activated as a quick-play effect. Its main job in this deck is to stop cards such as The White Stone of Ancients or Fire King High Avatar Garunix. Be careful as you cannot chain this effect to graveyard effects that already have been triggered. Fire Kings is the best victim to Dweller’s effect, and their presence in the meta has a strong influence on whether or not this card should be in your extra deck.

Sword Breaker

Duel Links Card: Sword%20Breaker

This Xyz usage is really dependent on the meta around it because it functions as a counter card. By detaching one material you can declare a monster type, if a battle occurs involving Sword Breaker and the declared monster type that monster would be destroyed without targeting.

Gagaga Cowboy

Duel Links Card: Gagaga%20Cowboy

Cowboy is back, folks. Cowboy’s self-boost and enemy attack drain is not hindered by F.A. Hang on Mach and that allows this deck to beat over a level 14, 4200 attack F.A. Hang on Mach with the help of Gagagatag. To OTK a F.A. Hang on Mach board you don’t need Cowboy but in the cases of opening 2 techs only Cowboy can beat over it.

Number 18: Heraldry Patriarch

Duel Links Card: Number%2018:%20Heraldry%20Patriarch

This card can be a practical extra deck option against Harpies, albeit still a niche one. This card can single handedly shut down their summons and stop them in their tracks. This card needs to be tested more but remains an interesting turn 1 option instead of Photon Strike Bounzer.

Number 45: Crumble Logos the Prophet of Demolition

Duel Links Card: Number%2045:%20Crumble%20Logos%20the%20Prophet%20of%20Demolition

This card has very niche uses to target certain cards like Amazoness Onslaught and to play around Fiendish Chain. Fiendish Chain usage has risen with the rise of F.A. Hang On Mach and a negated Gagaga Sister can be devastating. With Gagaga Child you can overlay into Number 45 and continue your turn.

Techs

These techs are usually seen in the main deck or side deck but saying that does not stop anyone from experimenting with other options. Check every card included here then choose to your liking.

Duel Links Card: Hey,%20Trunade!
Duel Links Card: Offerings%20to%20the%20Doomed
Duel Links Card: Book%20of%20Moon
Duel Links Card: Mystical%20Space%20Typhoon
Duel Links Card: Cosmic%20Cyclone
Duel Links Card: D.D.%20Crow
Duel Links Card: Treacherous%20Trap%20Hole
Duel Links Card: Mind%20Drain
Duel Links Card: Mistaken%20Arrest
Duel Links Card: Artifact%20Lancea

Hey, Trunade!

Duel Links Card: Hey,%20Trunade!

Your main and best backrow removal card. Onomat dodged a semi-limit so Trunade is still available to us. Ideally you want to open it to deal with 2-3 backrow turn 2 (although you could play around 1 set with the help of Gagagawind). If you open or drew Trunade and you are facing a deck that does not rely on backrow it can limit your plays or even prevent an OTK.

Offerings to the Doomed

Duel Links Card: Offerings%20to%20the%20Doomed

This tech card helps you with your OTK or can be set for more defensive play turn 1. Why this over Book of Moon? In a match up that does not have destruction protection or floating monsters, Offerings help more by removing that monster off the field and enables you to OTK with fewer cards or in some situations guaranteeing your OTK. Don’t forget when you use this tech you will skip your next draw phase.

Book of Moon

Duel Links Card: Book%20of%20Moon

The tech card that every deck uses if the player can afford it. Book of Moon is currently one of the most popular spell cards in the game and for good reason. It is a quick play spell that flips a monster face down that can be used either aggressively or defensively (like Paleozoic Canadia). Flipping monsters face down is better overall than destroying them if the meta consists of monsters that have destruction protection and/or float in the GY.

Mystical Space Typhoon

Duel Links Card: Mystical%20Space%20Typhoon

The newest backrow removal card that everyone is talking about. Does it negate? Does it not? We will not answer those questions here but what we will tell you is that MST is a great anti-backrow card. Why this over Cosmic Cyclone? When you don’t care about banishing the backrow why would you pay 1000LP to do the same job as MST? And with the popularity of Treacherous Trap Hole if you destroy one backrow any TTH that was set or in general will be unusable.

Cosmic Cyclone

Duel Links Card: Cosmic%20Cyclone

This is an alternative backrow removal card that fits better in matchups that benefit more to banish a set or a faceup spell/trap, examples like Darklords, Evil Eye and Triamids.

D.D. Crow

Duel Links Card: D.D.%20Crow

With the introduction of Star Seraph Darklords to the meta this card is seeing more and more play. Your main way of using it is by banishing a card in the GY that can be recycled or be used in a combo that will lead to your loss.

Treacherous Trap Hole

Duel Links Card: Treacherous%20Trap%20Hole

With Onomat being a deck that doesn’t play traps, TTH is a guaranteed pop 2. Why would an OTK deck play TTH? In the very rare matchups that you cannot OTK or turn 1 boards that restricts your turn 2 your last resort to win those games is by going first and using this busted trap to stop that play.

Mind Drain

Duel Links Card: Mind%20Drain

Onomat has been known to have problems with hand traps for the longest time even if they could play around one hand trap. With the increased popularity of Fire Kings and Lunalights as a Counter Deck for Onomat you can now side against them or any deck that heavily relies on Destiny Draw by setting this unexpected trap turn 1 then surprise them turn 2 by disabling any monster effects that can be activated in the hand. You can even use this as a counter against Star Seraph Darklords disabling their Star Seraph Sovereignty and some of the main Darklord cards.

Artifact Lancea

Duel Links Card: Artifact%20Lancea

The anti-banish card. Best used against decks that benefit from banishing cards, especially against Thunder Dragons. Be careful of over committing to this card because compared to other side deck cards this either saves your life turn 2 or bricks you.

Mistaken Arrest

Duel Links Card: Mistaken%20Arrest

Star Seraph Darklords is one of the worst matchups or you could say the worst matchup for Onomat. This card’s existence in the side deck is to give you a chance to win that matchup if you go first. When activated neither plays can add cards from their deck except by drawing them until your next draw phase. That stops some draw power Star Seraph Darklords have and they really depend on that to make their plays.

Match-Ups

Blue-Eyes

Going first:

The most preferred play is making a 1 card Steelswarm Roach after Dodododraw without using the skill because you’re guaranteeing the opponent won’t make Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon. On your next turn landing a OTK through some beat sticks with your skill up should be simple.

Steelswarm Roach can also be made turn 1 by those using Gagaga Child alongside a summoned Gagaga Sister. This play does not commit to too many resources and can stop their special summons allowing for an easier counter attack on turn 3.

Just the standard Photon Strike Bounzer into Gagaga Head opener is somewhat safe because negating Sage with Eyes of Blue could mean they can’t add a The White Stone of Ancients for Cards of Consonance.

You generally don’t want to clog your board with 2 defensive Xyz monsters as it gets hard to follow up. If your non-Xyz monsters survive to your next turn you can sometimes Gagagabolt and/or Diamond Dire Wolf without using your Normal Summon on your next turn to play through their backrow.

If you drew so badly you can’t even make a Photon Strike Bounzer with Gagaga Head followup, passing the turn without summoning anything is a legit strategy. If the BE player’s hand allows a OTK on an empty board you’re not winning that game with a Photon Strike Bounzer and no skill or followup anyway.

Going second:

You can break their board with the Fairy Knight Ingunar combo. (See combo guide)

You can break a Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon + BE board with the tag combo (See combo guide)

If the BE player has Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon and doesn’t tag out into Azure-Eyes Silver Dragon when you have the materials on the board to make a Rank 6, you can make Photon Strike Bounzer and negate it when it tries to tag out, huge misplay by the BE player to not tag out earlier but it does happen.

If they tag out into Azure-Eyes Silver Dragon and you have Offerings to the Doomed, by chaining it to Azure-Eyes Silver Dragon’s effect it will go through.

As for backrow, they tend to play Karma Cut, Raigeki Break, Treacherous Trap Hole, Book of Moon and Hallowed Life Barrier. If there’s no Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon on the field you can look at the Hourglass to determine what backrow you’re dealing with. With Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon on the board it will always flicker.

Treacherous Trap Hole will flicker if there’s 2 monsters on the board. Karma Cut if you control a monster, Raigeki Break if there’s any other card. Book of Moon if there’s any monster, Hallowed Life Barrier will always flicker. With some deductive reasoning you can get information about their backrow and act accordingly.

In case of Hallowed Life Barrier you want to summon Abyss Dweller and enough bodies to not die and use its effect on your turn and on theirs by toggling on and using it in their draw phase so they can’t use The White Stone of Ancients, and have follow up available.

Always be careful when bouncing Blue-Eyes White Dragon back to their hand if you can’t OTK because having 2 Blue-Eyes White Dragon in their hand is the activation requirement of their skill Ultimate Dragons.

Star Seraph Darklords

Going First:

You always want to negate Star Seraph Scepter with Photon Strike Bounzer, so the standard turn 1 is always correct here. Since Star Seraph Scepter has 1800 attack if you open a live draw you want to end on Photon Strike Bounzer+ Dodododwarf Gogogoglove in defence or Zubababanco Gagagacoat in attack position as Star Seraph Scepter isn’t bigger than those and having one of those on the field on your next turn can allow you to make a Diamond Dire Wolf without using your normal summon to pop their backrow.

If they open with the Darklords engine instead of the Stick/Chair engine you want to negate the first Darklord they summon as it attempts to revive a Darklord from the graveyard.

If you open 2 techs, it’s worth considering making a Constellar Ptolemy M7 instead of Photon Strike Bounzer and adding back the Zubababanco Gagagacoat with its effect if one of your techs can prevent them getting their combo off. By doing this you don’t have to rely on topdecking another monster to push for game on your next turn.

In a side deck format setting Mind Drain or Mistaken Arrest and flipping it in their standby phase stuns their deck for the most part unless they have MST in their hand in the case of Mind Drain.

Going second:

This is the hardest deck to win against going second if they open their combo. I’ll explain why and what to look out for.

If they have Banishment of the Darklords in their Graveyard and you try to destroy one of their Darklord monsters, they will activate it’s effect to return Banishment of the Darklords to the deck to search the Darklord Monster they can discard to prevent destruction.

If they have The Sanctified Darklord set they can negate one of your monsters and gain life points equal to its attack by sending a Darklord from the hand or from the field to the graveyard.

If they have The Sanctified Darklord in the Graveyard they can use any Darklord monster’s effect to return it to the deck and negate one of your monsters.

The monster they negate is negated the entire turn, so if they negate Gagaga Sister you have a Level 2 monster clogging your board, unless if you summon another Gagaga Sister with Utopic Onomatopoeia or Gagagawind and use that Gagaga Sister‘s effect to change it’s level.

Apart from The Sanctified Darklord their set cards could be Book of Moon or Mystical Space Typhoon or a bluff.

Knowing all that, it’s very rough if not impossible to win if they open their combo and set up, but if you keep all this in mind it’s possible to find a rare line of play that OTKs them once in blue moon.

That being said, they are prone to bricking and if they do it can get really easy. You’re more dependent on their draws than your own play in this matchup.

As they only run 1 copy of the The Sanctified Darklord and 1 copy Darklord Contact, hitting one of those with Cosmic Cyclone is a huge powerplay.

Since their Stick/Chair combo discards a card from your hand with Evilswarm Ourobouros you’re kinda just hoping it’s a card that’s useful in the Graveyard, otherwise you’re at an even bigger disadvantage.

Harpies

Going first:

Just the standard Photon Strike Bounzer into Gagaga Head opener is somewhat safe because negating Harpie Channeler usually means they can’t OTK. If you negate Harpie Perfumer there is a chance you die if they play Swallow’s Nest, as it will allow them to resolve Harpie Channeler freely. Look up the latest Harpie builds to decide if negating Harpie Perfumer or holding it for Cyber Slash Harpie Lady is better.

The preferred play is making a 1 card Number 18: Heraldry Patriarch after Dodododraw without using the skill because this Xyz monster stops their entire strategy. Twice when they control 2 Harpies you can pop 1 of them, this is not once per turn. After the first pop, they cannot use Elegant Egotist until it leaves the field. It pops the one you are not targeting, so target Harpist so they don’t get it’s GY effect.

You can also make Number 18: Heraldry Patriarch with Gagaga Sister + Gagaga Child, if you have Gagaga Head to follow-up. If you have this card in your extra deck, it is better vs Harpies than Photon Strike Bounzer.

If you open 2 techs, make Constellar Ptolemy M7, search Gagagabolt and add back Zubababancho Gagagacoat. Use one of your techs to disrupt their first summon.

If they have a quickplay spell to stop your monster from disrupting them they can OTK you unless you have a tech to stop them.

Going Second:

It’s a free win if you open Hey,Trunade! or if they have no backrow, just keep in mind if their synchro monster is on the field, they can bounce a card when you use a spell.

If you use Gagagawind, if they chain their Synchro to Gagagawind, they can’t bounce what Gagagawind is summoning because chains resolve backwards. First, they bounce, then Gagagawind summons.

A clean way to OTK through 1 backrow with 5 Onomat cards and no techs is by making Diamond Dire Wolf with Gagaga Sister and Gagaga Child, searching Gagagawind with Gagaga Sister, and then using Gagagawind to summon Utopic Onomatopoeia from hand, which can summon Dodododwarf Gogogoglove and Zubababancho Gagagacoat from hand so you can double Xyz. You can use Number 18: Heraldry Patriarch to pop all Harpie Ladies except 1, and then clear the other one with Number 70: Malevolent Sin and swing for game.

A play to consider if facing multiple backrow if your hand is not giving you good options is to summon Gagaga Sister, Gagaga Child and Zubababancho Gagagacoat (searching Gagagatag), using Gagaga Sister’s effect on Gagaga Child and then boosting your field and seeing how they react.

If you’re ever in a position to make a Rank 4 while they control multiple cards named Harpie Lady (their synchro is named harpie lady too) and you have Number 18: Heraldry Patriarch in your extra deck, keep in mind you can use its effect on summon so it’s too late for them to react with a flip or a pop.

Water Xyz

Going First:

You always want to make a Photon Strike Bounzer with Gagaga Sister + Zubababancho Gagagacoat. If you use the skill to accomplish this you want Gagaga Head to be one of your searches. Photon Strike Bounzer is always used to negate Deep Sea Diva, unless if they Normal Summon the monster that let’s them evacuate 3 cards, that’s fine to negate too because they won’t Deep Sea Diva that same turn.

If you have Dodododraw, don’t overextend with a second Xyz, just use any additional summon from the GY to end on Photon Strike Bounzer + a monster in defence position. Not attack position because they have a monster that summons another monster if it inflicts battle damage.

If you have a defensive tech like Offerings to the Doomed, toggle on in their Draw Phase, when prompted to use Offerings to the Doomed, say no while looking at that Hourglass. If it flickers between then and the next time you’re prompted to use Offerings to the Doomed, they have Forbidden Lance or Book of Moon.

If you see the hourglass flicker, you generally want to save Offerings to the Doomed until your next turn unless if they set 3 backrow making them unable to use a Quickplay, or use it when -800 attack from Forbidden Lance is relevant to them swinging over something or not.

Otherwise you could use it on Atlantean Heavy Infantry safely, but keep in mind from a card advantage perspective, it’s better to wait for them to summon a second monster from Hand before you use it, as you’re dealing with 2 of their cards that way, 1 with Offerings to the Doomed, 1 by swinging over it next turn.

Going second:

Offering is for an Abyss Dweller with Atlantean Heavy Infantry equipped, this is a no brainer.

If their board is a single Abyss Dweller + no backrow, either because of our good friend Hey, Trunade! or them drawing badly, and you opened a Gagagabolt or a Gagagawind, you can Normal Summon Gagagasister, search the one you don’t have. Gagagabolt the Abyss Dweller, they respond to pop Gagaga Sister. Special Summon Gagaga Mancer with Gagagawind. Revive Gagaga Sister with Gagaga Mancer. Special Zubababancho Gagagacoat from hand. Overlay Zubababancho Gagagacoat + Gagaga Mancer to make Samurai. 1900x2 + 200 = exact lethal. Gagaga Sister is needed because Abyss Dweller will negate Gagaga Mancer’s effect to boost for 500.

If they have no monster on the field and only a single backrow, either because of Offerings to the Doomed or because they drew badly, you can Normal Summon Gagaga Sister while looking at their Hourglass. If you’re prompted to search a card without it flickering, search a Gagagabolt. Then Gagagabolt the backrow next while it’s unactivatable. It’s often just a Treacherous Trap Hole and they needed you to summon a second monster.

Another tip for this matchup is you can prevent their Abyss Dweller from popping by making your own Abyss Dweller. Ways to do this while having more summons available afterwards are Dododo Buster with Dodododwarf Gogogoglove in the GY, or Normal Summoning Gagaga Sister, searching Gagagawind, then if you have Dodododwarf Gogogoglove in the GY or hand, Special Summoning Utopic Onomatopoeia with Gagagawind and summoning the Dodododwarf Gogogoglove. You can then summon Zubababancho Gagagacoat from hand because you control Gagaga Sister still, after making Abyss Dweller.

Side Deck Recommendations:

Duel Links Card: Offerings%20to%20the%20Doomed

Fire Kings

Going first:

Because Fire Kings needs a very specific hand to OTK you (Fire King Island + Fire King High Avatar Garunix + a lv 4 monster) unless if your opening hand contains both Gagaga Sister and Zubababancho Gagagacoat, it’s correct to just pass the the turn over to them without summoning a monster, because that way they can’t activate Onslaught of the Fire Kings. It’s a 4 card combo to OTK through a handtrap so saving your cards and your skill is worth taking a little risk for.

If you do summon Photon Strike Bounzer, because their lv 4 monsters are smaller than Bounzer’s 2000 defence, and their Fire King High Avatar Garunix has the same attack as Photon Strike Bounzer and summons a monster from the deck that will negate you on your next turn if destroyed by crashing into it (harder to deal with thanFire King High Avatar Garunix) Photon Strike Bounzer has to be in defence position to play around them crashing.

Setting a Cosmic Cyclone or Mystical Space Typhoon makes this even more safe because destroying it will wipe their entire board making them unable to kill you that turn.

Setting Mind Drain makes it so you can OTK through a handtrap on your next turn unless they have backrow removal, doing so is a powerplay vs Fire Kings.

If you happen to openDodododwarf Gogogoglove, just set it in defence position as it’s 1800 defence is perfect to wall all the lv 4 monsters and it’s useful in the Graveyard if it does get destroyed. If it remains on the field you can combo without needing your Normal Summon.

About Fire King Island, never Cosmic/MST when they play it, wait until they actually attempt to activate its effect as it’s hard once per turn and chaining to the effect activation will negate it. If you do it too early they can just activate another one from hand.

Going Second:

If they have a negate, you need Gagaga Bolt or Offerings to the Doomed on top of your 4 card combo to OTK through a handtrap. Cosmic/MST also works as a replacement if they have Fire King Island out.

The major way you can mess up is by triggering their Destiny Draw. Do not under any circumstances launch an attack that drops them below 2000 life points unless that attack kills them if they don’t block it.

If you have Mind Drain it’s worth considering to just set a Monster and pass to OTK them on your next turn when they can’t activate handtraps, if a handtrap would stop your push. Especially if you also have Cosmic/MST to board wipe them if they try to go for game with Fire King Island, setting a monster is not even necessary then. Calculate how much damage you’ll take when doing this because Mind Drain has a 1000 LP activation cost.

If you’re unable to OTK through a handtrap, Abyss Dweller is a very good option because it can both negate their graveyard activations and poke for less than 2000 to force them to use a handtrap on your other monster. A neat little trick is if you make Abyss Dweller with Gagaga Mancer, it can detach during their turn to get boosted to 2200 so their 1800 attack monsters can’t swing over it. Another neat little trick is by using your toggle, you can detach Gagaga Mancer after attack declaration when it’s too late to Sphere Kuriboh.

About Abyss Dweller‘s actual effect, their monster’s GY effects is very telegraphed, they activate in the standby phase, so don’t just randomly activate it. Also keep in mind if they’re under Abyss Dweller‘s effect, destroying Fire King Island won’t wipe their board.

Thunder Dragons

Going first:

The basic play here is to make a Photon Strike Bounzer by overlaying Gagaga Sister + Zubababancho Gagagacoat, searching a Gagagabolt. When using the skill to accomplish this, make sure you also get Gagaga Head. If the end result is Photon Strike Bounzer on board with Gagaga Head + Gagagabolt in hand, you are set to OTK them the next turn.

If you open a Dodododraw and a discard, you can do this same play, summoning what you discarded with Dodododraw in defence position with Zubababancho Gagagacoat‘s effect. If you have a Utopic Onomatopoeia or a Dodododwarf Gogogoglove in defence position, you can use it to summon Dodododwarf Gogogoglove or Utopic Onomatopoeia from hand to make a Steelswarm Roach to be extra safe. This is only worth doing if you can make the Steelswarm Roach and also have a Gagaga Head + Gagagabolt for followup, otherwise you’re overextending your resources and you’ll struggle to close out the game.

If you have a defence tech after Dodododraw and a way to revive what you discarded with Dodododraw to make a Steelswarm Roach in defence position without using the skill, this is 100% safe and even better then the play above.

If you open 2 techs your best bet is to use the skill to grab Gagaga Sister + Zubababancho Gagagacoat to make Constellar Ptolemy M7 and to add back Zubababancho Gagagacoat with Constellar Ptolemy M7’s effect. Then you hope you can protect the Constellar Ptolemy M7 with techs so you have a bounce and a pop next turn to OTK with.

If their normal summon is Aloof Lupine, negate it with Photon Strike Bounzer.

If their normal summon is Raiden,Hand of the Lightsworn hold the Photon Strike Bounzer negate for Vermillion Dragon Mech unless you have a defensive tech. Your defensive tech should always be used onConstellar Ptolemy M7,Vermillion Dragon Mech, Diamond Dire Wolf or anything else that has an effect to remove the monster on your field.

Going second:

They usually make Photon Strike Bounzer. There’s a couple of cards that allow you to play through it.

If you open Gagagabolt, you can normal Utopic Onomatopoeia and Gagagabolt the Photon Strike Bounzer, then use Utopic Onomatopoeia’s effect.

If you open Dodododraw, after discarding Utopic Onomatopoeia or Dodododwarf Gogogoglove, you can force the negate with Gagaga Sister (it searches Gagagabolt to end the Photon Strike Bounzer if not negated). Next you summon Zubababancho Gagagacoat from hand, which summons what’s in your GY, and you go from there.

Alternatively when you discard Dodododwarf Gogogoglove with Dodododraw, you can special Dododo Buster + Dodododwarf Gogogoglove without using your normal summon, then force the Photon Strike Bounzer to use it’s effect with a rank 4 Xyz, and then go from there

If they have Thunder Dragonroar on the field, you want to remove it with Constellar Ptolemy M7. Any other removal and it will summon a Thunder Dragon from the deck, making it hard to OTK. The only exception is if you activate Abyss Dweller before destroying it.

So that’s how you beat their monsters, next up is reading handtraps.

Hourglass flickers after you draw for turn before you do anything means Thunder Dragondark is in hand, you won’t be able to read anything because of it.

If the Hourglass flickers for the first time when one of your cards goes to the GY, they have D.D. Crow to banish what you’ll attempt to revive from the GY, so you’ll have to play around this by setting up lethal without using a revival, for example by summoning Zubababancho Gagagacoat in attack position with its effect from hand alongside Utopic Onomatopoeia and Gagaga Sister.

If their Hourglass flickers for the first time when you summon for the third time that turn, they can summon a 2800 defence monster from their hand Trifortressops at any moment for the rest of the turn, that’s unaffected by card effects. This means you can only OTK with a tag combo (see combo guide). At this time you’re probably too late to go for that combo so you’ll want to make Defensive Xyz monsters like Photon Strike Bounzer and Steelswarm Roach to survive their next turn, while having follow up. In game 2 and game 3 in a side deck format, this handtrap is really common so aim to OTK with a tag combo if possible then.

Game 1 The most common hand trap will be Sphere Kuriboh, which you can OTK through by ending on a Constellar Ptolemy M7 + Gagaga Samurai + Zubababancho Gagagacoat board. (See combo guide). This is the play if you can do it + break their board.

Onomat

Going first:

The best defensive board you can make in the mirror is a Photon Strike Bounzer with Utopic Onomatopoeia and Dodododwarf Gogogoglove in defence position. This is easy to accomplish with Dodododraw, and very yolo without it, as you need a Gagaga Head or a Zubababancho Gagagacoat to OTK next turn, which narrows it down to 3 top decks.

If you have a defensive tech like Offerings to the Doomed you never yolo for more def than Photon Strike Bounzer. You negate the Gagaga Sister and use Offerings to the Doomed on their Zubababancho Gagagacoat. If they go for a Dododo Buster play you use Offerings to the Doomed on their Dodododwarf Gogogoglove.

Setting Gagagabolt as a bluff to protect your Offerings to the Doomed from Cosmic Cyclone might matter.

You can check for a quick play in their Draw Phase with the toggle button if you haveOfferings to the Doomed. If there’s delay and they’re not using it on Photon Strike Bounzer, it’s probably Forbidden Lance in which case you want to save Offerings to the Doomed for your next turn (If there is one if you hold it).

Going second:

If there’s a set card, by looking at your Hourglass after you draw a card. If it flickers it’s Book of Moon or Offerings to the Doomed. If it doesn’t it’s a bluff or Treacherous Trap Hole if they control 1 monster.

In case of Photon Strike Bounzer + 2 bodies in defence, you need a Gagagabolt or Offerings to the Doomed to OTK. If you have it and there’s no backrow you can take out the Photon Strike Bounzer with it and simple OTK with Gagaga Sister, Utopic Onomatopoeia and Zubababancho Gagagacoat making Number 70: Malevolent Sin + Constellar Ptolemy M7.

If the opponent didn’t use Dodododraw to accomplish this, and you’re unable to OTK, clearing the board and adding a card back with Constellar Ptolemy M7 might seal the game as the opponent is likely relying on a lucky topdeck to rebuild it.

When playing around backrow without Hey, Trunade!, if you have Dodododraw, you generally want to go for Dodododwarf Gogogoglove + Dododo Buster to force disruption out without using your Normal Summon. Getting a Gagaga on the field without using your Normal Summon with Gagagabolt in hand is a power play here, as you can Gagagabolt the Photon Strike Bounzer and then Diamond Dire Wolf the backrow if they’re holding their disruption.

Cyber Dragons

Going First:

Very straightforward. Always make a Photon Strike Bounzer with Gagaga Sister + Zubababancho Gagagacoat. Always negate Cyber Dragon Core, and if there’s no Cyber Dragon Core, the effect of Chimeratech Rampage Dragon to send 2 Cydra to the GY. If you sided a quick play backrow removal set it to target a potential Fusion Gate.

If you sided into Sword Breaker, summon it instead and click Machines. Hilariously there’s nothing they can do to it without a tech like Offerings/Herald, even if they have a full Fusion Gate combo.

If you have multiple monsters on the field and their Hourglass shows a quickplay in their standby phase you hold the Photon Strike Bounzer negate for Chimeratech Rampage Dragon.

Number 18: Heraldry Patriarch gives you the best chance to survive if you chain it to them fusing and you target anything but Proto-Cyber Dragon, unless there’s only Proto-Cyber Dragon.

If you open a live Dodododraw, summoning a monster with the same attribute alongside Bounzer/Sword Breaker by utilizing Zubababancho Gagagacoat to revive your discard plays around Herald of the Abyss.

Going second:

They are 100% reliant on backrow. If you open Hey, Trunade! you win. Always put in all your backrow hate vs them in side-decking.

Be aware of what cards count as Cyber Dragons when in the GY or facedown, sometimes you can play around or force Cybernetic Overflow by removing it’s materials instead of using Gagagabolt on it which would give them a search. Beware of Drowning Mirror Force as it’s sometimes teched but don’t let this fear control you too much.

Tips for other Matchups

Against Lunalights you can out Lunalight Sabre Dancer with Hieratic Sun Dragon Overlord of Heliopolis , Fairy Knight Ingunar and Sword Breaker. The combo guide has several ways to OTK through hand traps, they generally run Sphere Kuriboh and Battlin’ Boxer Veil. Abyss Dweller puts in a lot of work negating their GY effects, if you can out Lunalight Sabre Dancer you can destroy them in a grind game by using Abyss Dweller effectively. Lunalight Crimson Fox not reducing one of your monsters to 0 atk is huge too.

Against Tech Genus if they summon their boss monster turn 1, you can simply out it without any techs by summoning Dododo Buster first, and Dodododwarf Gogogoglove after that. For them negating Dododo Buster means you still have your Normal Summon. Negating Dodododwarf Gogogoglove means it’s coming right back. Negating what Dodododwarf Gogogoglove specials from hand means you overlay for Gagaga Samurai so you can special Zubababancho Gagagacoat from hand. Allowing all the summons above means you make Number 70: Malevolent Sin which forces it. They have no good answer. When going first negate T.G. Star Guardian‘s second effect to summon from hand. They can’t do anything to you without a tech like Book of Moon.

Against Heroes always negate Vision HERO Increase, not Vision HERO Faris, and summon Photon Strike Bounzer in def position.

Against Blackwings Steelswarm Roach + def position monsters is your best shot at survival, but it’s a longshot so prioritize having follow up to OTK them if they brick. Their brick hands won’t OTK through set pass.

Final Thoughts

Onomats have gone from plucky underdogs to a competitive and much-maligned deck in the past 6 months thanks to the continuous support from box after box. As an anime deck, the archetype is hopefully here to stay, and it may evolve even further as the support flows in. There’s wide speculation that the deck will land in the crosshairs of the next banlist or skill changes, but we hope this guide helps you enjoy playing Onomats until then and hopefully even thereafter.

Acknowledgements

Thank you to everyone who has contributed directly and indirectly in the Onomat discord channel. This guide has been a long time coming. If you have any questions about the combos, deck building, or side deck, then don’t hesitate to @ any of the publishers of the guide, especially Rich. Alternatively, if you’re shy then just put your question in the Onomat channel in the DLM Discord. Major props to those who compete week after week using Onomats and especially to Buns for his input on this guide Of course, special thanks to Jadehex and RandomPl0x for their work here and in the community.
