Gladiator Beasts Breakdown
The general strategy of the deck is to use your Gladiator Beast monsters in battle. This will allow you to return that Gladiator Beast to the deck to special summon another with a different name. This mechanic is commonly referred to as “tagging out” and this is how it will be named on this page and the guide. These tagging effects mean the deck can deal with almost any board state and generate card advantage every turn. The strength of the deck is its versatility. The core of the deck is between seven and eight monsters. This gives the deck between twelve and thirteen tech spots which you can customize to have favourable matchups against a specific group of decks. The deck has seen a resurgence in playability due to the October 2018 Forbidden and Limited list essentially removing Amazoness from the metagame and limiting troublesome cards such as Hey! Trunade and Treacherous Trap Hole. Since the implementation of the new list Gladiator Beasts have some notable tops including a recent DLPT Top 4 and second place in DLTW. However, this success has brought threats to the deck as players have begun side decking Jinzo, Hey! Truande and even Mirror of Oaths to counter us.
Because this deck has been out of the meta for a while, we do not have enough statistics on the deck to generate an up-to-date breakdown. See below for the most recent available decklists.
- You have a way to never deck out with Gladiator Beasts. You can tag two monsters into the deck to summon Gladiator Beast Essedarii. This includes Essedarii himself. This means you can summon Essedarii every turn and return one Gladiator to the deck every turn. Always be aware of the option to win through deck out in the late game.
- Gladiator Beast Nerokius stops any effect activation after declaring an attack. It therefore gets through Amazoness Onslaught, Sphere Kuriboh, Sea Stealth Attack and Des Counterblow. It does not stop continuous effects such as Mirror Wall, Vampire Kingdom and Toon Kingdom.
- You can use Super Rush Headlong on a tagged in Gladiator Beast Dimacari to destroy two monsters of the same attribute in one turn. This can be devastating against decks like Masked Heroes and Blue-Eyes.
- Gladiator Beast Bestiari and Gladiator Beast Murmillo’s tag in effects are mandatory so only summon them if you can destroy a card your opponent controls. Take note of what Gladiators have been destroyed and take care to not destroy your own cards.
- Against decks which use chainable cards which summon monsters from the graveyard, hand or deck (e.g. Silver’s Cry and Powerful Rebirth) always tag in Gladiator Beast Bestiari to force the activation of that card and then Gladiator Beast Murmillo second to destroy the summoned monster.
- If you activate Sealed Tombs you cannot banish cards using Gladiator Beast Retiari while it is active.
- If Gladiator Beast Darius summons a monster its effect is negated but it will still activate. This is a continuous effect. Therefore, if Darius was to be negated then that monsters effect would no longer be negated. For example, Gladiator Beast Murmillo will attempt to destroy a monster when summoned by Darius. You can use Forbidden Chalice on Darius in the same chain link to allow Murmillo’s effect to go through. This is also useful for tagging out monsters summoned by Darius.
